TripAdvisor has adopted a three-pronged approach to ensure the integrity of the TripAdvisor GreenLeaders programme:
We've developed the TripAdvisor GreenLeaders programme so that it functions as a transparent system - one that allows anyone to learn more about any programme member's green practices. This means that, in addition to displaying a TripAdvisor GreenLeader badge on their property page, participants will also provide a full, publicly-viewable, detailed list of green practices currently in place. This ensures that travellers can see exactly which green practices they can expect at your property (e.g. If your hotel recycles; types of materials that are recycled; and where these materials are recycled). The set of required green practices for GreenPartner properties will also be publicly-viewable.
As the world's largest travel company, TripAdvisor places great value on the opinions of travellers. As such, we look to our global traveller community to help ensure the integrity of the TripAdvisor GreenLeaders program. Travellers will be invited to comment on the green practices at properties with TripAdvisor GreenLeader status. They will also be able to report on false information, in instances where a property's green practices claims are not matched by the traveller's experience. This feedback will be monitored by TripAdvisor's Responsible Travel team and, if necessary, will trigger a third-party audit.
We've partnered with independent expert sustainability organisations to conduct audits of the TripAdvisor GreenLeaders programme. In addition to audits triggered by traveller feedback, there will also be a set of audits conducted every year of applying and participating properties.
We'll inform properties when they've been selected for auditing, and then our auditors will carry out the audit process. Audits will include providing documentation and other proof that green practices are in place. For more information about what documentation will be requested for each question, please consult the TripAdvisor GreenLeader Survey Guide.
If a property knowingly submits a false application to TripAdvisor GreenLeaders that they are unable to substantiate with evidence, TripAdvisor reserves the right to post a prominent badge to the property's listing, explaining that the property has submitted an application to TripAdvisor GreenLeaders that it is unable to substantiate. Any and all modifications to a property's application, use of the penalty box, or inclusion in the TripAdvisor GreenLeader programme are within the sole discretion of TripAdvisor.
